Facilitation Case Study
The delivery of a facilitated strategic planning workshop for an UKRI funded unit at the University of St Andrews, Scotland
Background
As is often the case with our work, we frequently receive opportunities through referrals from past participants on our courses. In this instance, a past participant had been promoted to Director of an UKRI funded unit at The University of St Andrews and enquired as to whether we could provide facilitation for an important strategic workshop for the organisation.
Preparation
To ensure the workshop would meet their needs, two online meetings were convened with the director. The first, to confirm clarity about what was required. The second to review the brief and the proposed design of the workshop. This focused on what was missing, what could be improved and the logistics for the day.
This co-creation process then continued remotely through a number of iterations with regular feedback from the client to ensure the workshop was fit for purpose.
Delivery
The highly-interactive strategy workshop, attended by 40 participants (from PhD students to the Head of School), was carefully managed by the facilitator and the client throughout the day. Regular feedback was provided to ensure the workshop was on track, on time and was delivering the expected results.
Post workshop, the client and the facilitator arranged a meeting online to debrief on the workshop performance, review the feedback questionnaire responses and explore next steps.
